jc blog - tales of a modern-day nomadic hunter-gatherer

Follow jcomeau_ictx on Twitter This is the weblog of Intrepid Wanderer. You never know what you might find here; graphic descriptions of bodily functions, computer programming secrets, proselytizing for the antichrist, miscellaneous ranting and kvetching, valuable information on living off the land... if you don't share my rather weird interests you may want to try slashdot instead.

You can consider my Del.icio.us links an extension to my blog, as are my LifeTango goals and my other to-do items. My to-buy list is also public, but only for sharing any useful ideas that might be there; I'm not requesting charity, neither do I offer it.

You can find me easily in google searches, as jcomeau, jcomeau_ictx, or jcomeauictx. There are lots of other jcomeaus, but AFAIK I'm the only jcomeau_ictx out there so far.

If you want to comment on anything you see here, try the new Facebook comments, reachable by clicking the "[comment]" link at the end of each post. If for some reason that isn't working, go ahead and email me, jc.unternet.net. You know what to do with the first dot. Make the 'subject' line something reasonably intelligent-looking or it goes plunk! into the spambasket unread.

This RSS feed may or may not work. Haven't fiddled with it in forever. RSS Feed

Trying to pip install uwsgi on termux, got several errors 'sys/sem.h' file not found. Then after a pkg search libandroid, did pkg install libandroid-sysv-semaphore, which fixed that. Now getting use of undeclared identifier 'PTHREAD_CANCEL_ENABLE'.

The saga continues... What the hell did programmers do before search engines? [comment]

Fixed at least part of the problem.

cd /data/data/com.termux/files/usr/lib
ln -s openssl-1.1/libssl.so.1.1 .
ln -s openssl-1.1/libcrypto.so.1.1 .

Nope, I'm missing libssl.so.1 since installing openssh. Can't install anything else now; I get CANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE "/data/data/com.termux/files/usr/lib/apt/methods/https": library "libssl.so.1.1" not found. Dammit. [comment]

Found a way to fix the already-install Termux app on my newer phone. The command `termux-change-repo` pops up a text menu, to which you select all 3 repositories, `main`, `game`, and `science`. Then `OK`, which takes you to a list of mirrors. I chose `Mirrors by A1batross`, which worked for a while, but after installing some packages, my sources.list must have gotten corrupted again. Anyway I'm running it again, maybe I'll figure out a permanent fix. [comment]

I've been using refrigeration for a few days: 1 bag of ice (24 pesos, about $1.20 USD) in a small cooler with my arrachera meat. It works really well, there's still ice floating at the top 24 hours later. The meat is marinating in soy sauce inside ziploc bags. I'll up the marinade to chile powder, garlic powder, lime juice, more soy sauce, and maybe beer, the day before the party.

Ran out of soy sauce at this location, and don't want to buy a new bottle so close to leaving. And really don't feel like going all the way to Los Cardones or Calafia to refill. So I made a roughly 6% saline solution and put that in my bottle to tide me over. If I had used Negra Modelo instead of water, it would even look the part. [comment]

Just learned, or relearned, some things in Python I either never knew or had forgotten:

Create a custom list with arbitrary attribute without subclassing:

>>> type('jclist'), (list,), {'black': False})()
[]
>>> l=_
>>> l.black
False
>>> l.black=True
>>> l.black
True

I ended up not using that, but thought it was cool. Pretty sure I've subclassed list before for things I could have done with type.

Also, python3 -i program.py arg arg arg drops you into the interactive prompt after running a program, allowing you to examine globals and state. [comment]
