jc blog - tales of a modern-day nomadic hunter-gatherer

Follow jcomeau_ictx on Twitter This is the weblog of Intrepid Wanderer. You never know what you might find here; graphic descriptions of bodily functions, computer programming secrets, proselytizing for the antichrist, miscellaneous ranting and kvetching, valuable information on living off the land... if you don't share my rather weird interests you may want to try slashdot instead.

You can consider my Del.icio.us links an extension to my blog, as are my LifeTango goals and my other to-do items. My to-buy list is also public, but only for sharing any useful ideas that might be there; I'm not requesting charity, neither do I offer it.

You can find me easily in google searches, as jcomeau, jcomeau_ictx, or jcomeauictx. There are lots of other jcomeaus, but AFAIK I'm the only jcomeau_ictx out there so far.

If you want to comment on anything you see here, try the new Facebook comments, reachable by clicking the "[comment]" link at the end of each post. If for some reason that isn't working, go ahead and email me, jc.unternet.net. You know what to do with the first dot. Make the 'subject' line something reasonably intelligent-looking or it goes plunk! into the spambasket unread.

This RSS feed may or may not work. Haven't fiddled with it in forever. RSS Feed

On my trip back from Mexico recently, I think I picked up a respiratory virus, despite using Xlear religiously. Those 3 days of little sleep probably weakened my immune system. Got home Thursday morning and by Saturday afternoon I had the sniffles, moreso than the usual chronic problems. So I took an Ivermectin capsule and doubled my yogurt intake that day. It did the trick; it never got any worse, and by Tuesday, July 9th, I was back to my normal self. [comment]

Update on my alcohol odyssey, for those who have been following along: I cut my consumption down to once every full moon by making coffee all day long, with which I would substitute any cravings for beer. Then, knowing that that much caffeine isn't so great for my health either, I started making batches of cinnamon tea: 1 tbsp ground cinnamon to 6 quarts of water lasts me about 3 days. I've been doing this for several weeks now, and it's working well. But I didn't have this crutch available when I went to Mexico recently, so just let myself drink beer every day there. I was afraid that when I got back I would continue, but no, I'm right back to coffee and cinnamon tea. Also, as an added incentive, when I started the "full moon drinking" thing I also allowed myself sweets on every new moon, which usually means a brownie or two. Prior to this, I would typically eat sweets only 3 times a year or so. [comment]

Nope, not good enough. Also had to symlink it into /etc/initramfs/post-update.d. Here's /root/bin/lilo.post for the main Linux partition:

#!/bin/bash
dd if=/dev/sda4 of=/root/sda4-lilo.bin bs=512 count=1
if [ -e /media/sda3/MSDOS.SYS ]; then
 cp -f /root/sda4-lilo.bin /media/sda3/debian.bin
else
 echo /media/sda3 \(Windows partition\) is not mounted, aborting! >&2
 exit 1
fi
echo Localized lilo \($0\) tasks complete.

Still need to wait until some action triggers LILO again to see if this is really going to work. A symlink might not be the answer. [comment]

For years I've had the problem of upgrading Debian systems using a Windows boot manager, with LILO on the individual Linux partitions; forgetting to copy the partition boot sector to the Windows root. Finally, today, during an upgrade I happened to notice /etc/kernel/postinst.d, and copied my script to zzz-lilo.postinst, placing it dead last after LILO runs. Hopefully that will solve the problem once and for all. [comment]
