jc blog - tales of a modern-day nomadic hunter-gatherer

Follow jcomeau_ictx on Twitter This is the weblog of Intrepid Wanderer. You never know what you might find here; graphic descriptions of bodily functions, computer programming secrets, proselytizing for the antichrist, miscellaneous ranting and kvetching, valuable information on living off the land... if you don't share my rather weird interests you may want to try slashdot instead.

You can consider my Del.icio.us links an extension to my blog, as are my LifeTango goals and my other to-do items. My to-buy list is also public, but only for sharing any useful ideas that might be there; I'm not requesting charity, neither do I offer it.

You can find me easily in google searches, as jcomeau, jcomeau_ictx, or jcomeauictx. There are lots of other jcomeaus, but AFAIK I'm the only jcomeau_ictx out there so far.

If you want to comment on anything you see here, try the new Facebook comments, reachable by clicking the "[comment]" link at the end of each post. If for some reason that isn't working, go ahead and email me, jc.unternet.net. You know what to do with the first dot. Make the 'subject' line something reasonably intelligent-looking or it goes plunk! into the spambasket unread.

This RSS feed may or may not work. Haven't fiddled with it in forever. RSS Feed

Got an abuse warning from Hetzner this morning, that my server was portscanning. It was all from ipfs, so I did some digging. Turns out it's a known issue. I killed the process, then rm -rf ~/.ipfs, then ipfs init --profile=server.

To be on the safe side, I also ran as root:

ip rule add blackhole 10/8
ip rule add blackhole 192.168/16
ip rule add blackhole 172.16/12
ip rule add blackhole 169.254/16

That covers all the RFC1918 and link-local ipv4 addresses Hetzner was watching. If they watch ipv6 as well I may need to attend to that too. If you're running IPFS, you may want to watch out for this.

Still trying to remove some of the cruft from my primary BLU phone, hopefully without bricking it. Found an easy way to locate the bigger files:

~ $ adb reboot bootloader
~ $ fastboot boot ~/Downloads/romprovider.com.blutwrp.img
~ $ adb shell
~ # mount /system
~ # find / -size +1024 -type f -exec stat -t {} \; | sort -n -k2 | cut -d' ' -f1,2 | tail -n 200
~ # rm /path/to/big/file/1 /path/to/big/file/2 ...
~ # reboot

I can only do this because I previously unlocked the bootloader on this phone. I still need to use SP Flash on the backup phone, unless and until I resign myself to reinstalling everything on it. [comment]

Made some quasi-pozole today, with nixtamalized corn and pork and beef bones. Added onions, garlic, and some odds and ends I had, such as cheese, tomato puree, and purslane, among other foods and spices. It came out pretty good.

Also found a margarita recipe I like: 1 part fresh-squeezed lime juice, 1 part tequila, and 2 parts triple sec (Sisi brand). Just the right sweet to sour blend for me. [comment]

Got a full tank of propane today from Global Gas, after hearing their truck's jingle coming down the street. The trick is to wait about 5 minutes after first hearing it, because he disappears down side streets before resuming course down Revolución. It cost me $688 pesos, about 35 dollars. Hopefully this tank lasts me longer than the last one; that leak last year must have lost me a lot more than I realized. [comment]
