jc blog - tales of a modern-day nomadic hunter-gatherer

Follow jcomeau_ictx on Twitter This is the weblog of Intrepid Wanderer. You never know what you might find here; graphic descriptions of bodily functions, computer programming secrets, proselytizing for the antichrist, miscellaneous ranting and kvetching, valuable information on living off the land... if you don't share my rather weird interests you may want to try slashdot instead.

You can consider my Del.icio.us links an extension to my blog, as are my LifeTango goals and my other to-do items. My to-buy list is also public, but only for sharing any useful ideas that might be there; I'm not requesting charity, neither do I offer it.

You can find me easily in google searches, as jcomeau, jcomeau_ictx, or jcomeauictx. There are lots of other jcomeaus, but AFAIK I'm the only jcomeau_ictx out there so far.

If you want to comment on anything you see here, try the new Facebook comments, reachable by clicking the "[comment]" link at the end of each post. If for some reason that isn't working, go ahead and email me, jc.unternet.net. You know what to do with the first dot. Make the 'subject' line something reasonably intelligent-looking or it goes plunk! into the spambasket unread.

This RSS feed may or may not work. Haven't fiddled with it in forever. RSS Feed

Got this idea in a dream, but don't think I have the smarts to pull it off. It's a story, possibly 300 to 500 pages, a contract law "thriller". Is there even such a genre?

The set-up: a city in a tri-state area; a legal atmosphere of "woke" progressivism at the federal level; some large event being hosted in the area that requires a large amount of bread, pastry, whatever. The baker who gets the bid has already arranged with several smaller companies to parcel out the job because he can't do it alone. All have been doing business together for years in cooperative competition, even his ex-wife, who had started her own bakery after the break-up. But this time is different. They see a chance to bring their conservative, older, friend and competitor around to a "better" way of thinking, and, spearheaded by the ex, get together and decide to hold back on their parts of the deal unless he makes some concessions.

That's all I got so far. Anybody want to run with it, be my guest. [comment]

Finally figured out an alternative route to Anaheim from San Diego: 235 bus to Escondido; NCTD 388 to Pala Casino; walk 14 miles to Promenade Mall in Temecula; Riverside County 206 to Corona Transit Center; 200 bus all the way to Anaheim's ARTIC station. Now just have to make sure Megabus will go to ARTIC from San Francisco as it used to. [comment]

My Blackview phone wasn't charging overnight when connected to my computer, even though it showed the "lightning bolt" icon that showed power in. I'm thinking the problem was that I was connecting it while the computer was suspended, so it couldn't negotiate a higher current and was stuck at 100ma. Connecting while it was running allowed it to get 500ma and now it's charging. [comment]

That virus lasted for only 4 days. Still in mop-up mode, but got through it without any medicine, and without any coughing worth mentioning. [comment]

Over the last 24 hours, I developed a sore throat. Stress and sleep deprivation are both horrible for the immune system. Logically, it's stupid getting stressed out dealing with entities like Metrolink which don't care if you live or die, but I'm not always logical and/or stoic. [comment]
