what happened is that I did an apt-get upgrade, which overwrote the libc6 package among others, and those libraries got replaced:

how I found this out is that I couldn't use initctl list (yeah I know, Upstart on a Debian box? don't ask...)

even reboot doesn't work. I'll have to use -f, and maybe even that won't do it.
